PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SWIMMING
Physical Education is an important part of school life at St Georges Hanover Square and we expect all children to participate. PE provides children with the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities that enable them to develop both physical and social skills.Lessons are taught by qualified coaches from the CYMCA in keeping with the National Curriculum. All children have the opportunity to take part in skill acquisition, gymnastics, dance and team sports such as handball, football, netball, basketball, rounders, uni- hoc and Qwik cricket. The longer PE lessons get the children really active and promote fitness. Underpinning the lessons taught are three main principles, fun, pace and skill acquisition. Please follow the link to view our PE Curriculum map for this year. In addition to our regular PE lessons a YMCA coach also comes to each lunchtime play and provides physical activities for all the classes. It is a requirement of the National Curriculum for children to learn to swim. We want all our children to be able to swim at least 25 metres comfortably by the time they leave our school. In order to achieve this, children in Years 4, 5 and 6 have weekly swimming lessons at the local swimming pool for one term during the course of the academic year.We run different after school sport based clubs, e.g. gymnastics, football and martial arts which are open to all children. We participate in Active Week each year when the school adopts a healthy living theme for the week and outdoor active pursuits are provided by the coaches from the YMCA. Activities take place in Regent’s Park and include wide games, orienteering and an assault course. We also participate in inter- sports competitions organised by the YMCA three times a year, football, netball and basketball. PE and SPORTS GRANTThe government provides additional ring-fenced funding to improve the provision of physical education and sport in primary schools. Schools have been given the freedom to choose how they do this.
